Teacher Mocks Students Hair On Facebook

Chicago Public Schools is investigating a mother's concerns involving a picture her child's teacher allegedly posted on Facebook.

Ukailya Lofton, 7, says math is her favorite subject. She also likes to dress up. For picture day last week, Ukailya wore Jolly Rancher candies at the end of her braids, a hairstyle she says her computer teacher at Overton Elementary School mocked on Facebook.

"She took a picture of me and then she said my boyfriend can't believe this," Ukailya told ABC7.

"She told me her teacher told her to put her hair in her face and she took out her cell phone and she took a picture, not knowing she was putting my baby on Facebook and criticize her," said Lucinda Williams, mother.

Williams says she copied some of the comments from the teacher's Facebook page. The teacher allegedly wrote, "right, this is for picture day." Then someone commented,"if you are going to make your child look ridiculous, the least you can do is have them matching." Another wrote,"yeah, this is foolishness." And one added, "I laughed so hard that my contact popped out."

"My mama told me she put it on Facebook and then I felt sad," said Ukailya.

Full Story

Aisha sent me an email about this story so I thought I would share it here on the blog. I know some of the styles here are "out of the norm" (pumpkin style for Halloween, birds nest style for crazy hair day, etc) so I was wondering if after hearing this story you are concerned at all about this type of behavior happening in your child's school?

Thoughts?

  1. Why would she "fix" her kids hair like that? Why would the teacher put her on facebook???
Why did they both put that poor child out there like that? Sad.

    1. I dont think the mother did any wrong by put them candies at the end of that childs hair. If it was a child of a different race nobody would have said or took pic of there hair. That teacher was wrong pont blank. She should no better to do such a thing.

    2. If she wanted to fix her child’s hair in a ridiculous way that is her dam business and it is not the place of a teacher or anyone else to criticize nor put a pic on face book. If that would of happened to my child that teacher would not have a home to go to and feel comfortable in and I would of made it my personal business to do so. The style isn’t over creative it’s a style fit for a child. Not that different that barets at the end of her hair.

  2. That's so sad for the little girl, she's a pretty little girl. Scarey that teachers now a days think it's ok to do something like this. SMH.. she should be sooo ashamed of herslef, her actions are far more ridicolous than using jolly ranchers as a hair accessory.

  3. What the h*ll is wrong with people. It's sad that people like this are teaching our children.

  4. I think that it is highly immature for someone who is in a leadership role to criticize a child in this manner. That being said, pictures on a minor should not be posted on the internet without expressed permission of the parent. Children should feel safe in their schools. They have enough to be concerned about with regard to their fellow classmates that adding the personal criticism of their teachers is too much.

  5. What's even sadder than this teacher's ignorance is the fact that this little girl's individualism was crushed. She's 7 years old! If she felt the need to express herself through a particular hairstyle on picture day (which was completely harmless in my opinion: we are talking candy here) she should be celebrated for doing so. I hope that she is not scared by this mess.

  6. I agree with anon/first commenter. They were both wrong for that. Her momma should have never put some candy in her hair, that's beyond "creative" that actually is a bit foolish. But the teacher had no right exploiting the child & making fun of her. If taking a picture of your student to laugh at it on a website isn't worthy of some sort of punishment (or at least a damn acknowledgment and apology!) - that's sad. Public school system has to do better.

  7. I've seen the Jolly Rancher style before. For a 7 yr old, that's a pretty darn attractive style. I bet all the other kids were envious. The teacher had better be disciplined.

  8. This teacher needs to be charged for putting up a picture of a child who is a minor. And without permission from the parent. I know that she would not like it if someone did this to her child. So sad

  9. This teacher should be fired or suspended. Something needs to happen. You should not take pictures of your students for such malicious acts. You are supposed to be a role model to your students! WTF! She's violated this girl. I work in healthcare and I would never be able to work in my field again if I posted a picture of my patients on my facebook page. We are now going to need privacy laws put in place at schools to protect our children. This is the day and age we live in...it's sad! SMH

  10. i saw this story a little while ago on hairlista... just sad...the teacher was wrong for that...she had to know that by posting it online she would be found out and face consequences. I hate that the child had to go through that i personally dont see anything wrong with the style it was cute, fun, and creative..perfect for a 7yr old...i used to wear suckers in my head when i was little...so what!

  11. I want to know why the mother told her daughter that her pic was on fb & being made fun of. That was wrong IMO. The mother added to the problem. Please protect your child from some of the ugliness in this world - they don't need to know everything.

  12. TEACHER WOULD BE GETTING A BEATDOWN.. Like her hair or not.. u better not be putting pics up of my daughter on fb unless u asked and are talking about how intelligent she is! Id be going to jail... its that serious

  13. Wow, my first thoughts were jolly ranchers?!! But after reading the entire story I'm thinking that teacher should be fired. That is an innocent child and for her to post/mock her on facebook is a violation of her rights. I'm appalled at this situation but also sad that her mom passed on the information to her.

  14. jolly ranchers aside, the teacher's behavior is reprehensible! I can't imagine a teacher laughing at an innocent 7 year old child. That's ridiculous.
as for the jolly ranchers, eh... not my style but punky brewster was kinda out there, too, so I'm all about expressionism as long as it's not vulgar or offensive to some group.

  15. the teacher should have privatized her fb page. that mother, nor anyone else unauthorized, would have been able to see what the hell her pics were or her wall posts were, what her opinion about anybody's hair was. what makes these professionals have open fb pages is beyond my comprehension. ppl losing their jobs and everything over their big mouths

    1. I know this is old, however I have to say it should be against school policy for a teacher to take any pictures of children, whatever the intent is, positive or negative and post them to a social media site. It doesn't matter whether or not it is privatized. I know in our school district, unless parents have given permission, photos of children are not allowed. I was visiting my sons class to teach Polynesian dance and could not even take pictures with other children because of privacy concerns unless their parents agreed ahead of time. When I put pictures of my children online it is for private viewing. I would be extreemly angry if someone put a photo I did not authorize on fb or any other site even if it was to say, "look how cute".

  16. I agree with a number of commentators. This mother should have never told the child that she was being made fun of, the little girl would have never known if she wasn't told. I also agree that the teacher needs to learn how to make her profile private. I think a lawsuit is a bit extreme, but there should be some discipline for the teacher, and according to the story they were looking into it.

I think it's sad that whenever someone has been wronged in some way, their first response is to sue them.

  17. I had my hair like that when I was little. I have so many pictures of me with beads and barrettes in my hair. There is nothing wrong with the style. It is a culture thing that comes from our ancestors in Africa. They had been decorating there hair for centuries. And coming over here in slavery that tradition was passed down and instead of wooden beads and things made from the land. Nowadays They use plastic barrettes that is what they are called. Those styles are cute and adorable. There is nothing wrong with the way she has her hair. What is it because she is black and that is not the mainstream beauties of what your hair should be like. Guess what we are not the same in different cultures there are different hair styles and what the idea of beauty is. We should not make fun of others because they chose to follow the styles of there culture. We may not understand others who are different from us. But we must RESPECT them. Have compassion people, especailly for a child. That teacher should be fired.
