Cornrows, Twists & Hearts... Oh My!

Quite the combination, eh? See, what had happened was... I began styling Miss A's hair with absolutely no plan in mind. I think the outcome was cute and age appropriate for young girls, wouldn't you say?

Never mind that. I'm pretty sure you're all wondering where we've been... yes? Well, let's just say life happened. Between Lil Man being diagnosed with autism, Miss A being diagnosed with epilepsy, becoming a full time working single mom and almost everything you can think of in-between, it's safe to safe my hands have been full... and not with my daughters hair, as you can imagine! Ha. If you're interested in reading more about our personal life, feel free to stop by my other blogs Facebook page, Nik Gets Fit, chronicling my life and weight loss journey.

Just here for the hair? Got it! Let's get straight to the point...

I washed, banded and moisturized Miss A's hair as usual. If you've been following us for a while then you have probably already checked out her hair care routine, if not, click here for all the details including the products I use for this process.

Once her hair was banded, I parted the top section of hair from ear to ear and tied off the back. I began parting near her right ear first to begin the first cornrow. New to cornrowing? No worries! Check out our Cornrowing for Beginners post, here.

Once I had a few cornrows on each side, I decided to part a heart right on top. I'm not sure why, it just seemed like a good idea at the time. As you can see, my parting skills are a little rusty, I haven't done a heart in quite some time. As for how I parted the heart, well, it's actually very simple. Take your metal rat tail comb, and "draw" a heart in your child's hair. You may have to do this a few times. Always perfect your "rough draft" if possible! Once you have a shape that somewhat resembles a heart (haha), place that section of hair in a ponytail.

Alright, so now we have the cornrows, we have the heart... now all that's missing are the twists! I wanted larger twists so I twisted the remaining hair from two cornrows together at a time. I parted squares with the remaining hair in the back, placed a rubberband at each base, and twisted.

After about 1 week of wearing this hair style, I removed the two strand twists, creating a gorgeous twist out for Miss A's birthday party! Check out the pictures below. Shout out to Miss Teeny Fab Couture for making Miss A's custom Monster High birthday party outfit!

Little Girls Natural Twist Out - Step-by-step Instructions

Miss A's older cousin, Ky

Twist outs look great on all natural hair types and are absolutely adorable on little girls! I put together a quick picture tutorial for beginners. Hope it helps!

  • Start with washed and detangled hair. I decided to go the extra step and band Ky's hair as well just to give it a little length.
  • Part about a two inch section of hair with your fingers and add about a quarter size amount of your choice of product. I used Bee Mine Curly Butter on Ky's two strand twists. Don't worry about the white color showing up, it's from the product and it will fade away shortly.

You can use code BBBSPRING for 10% off your Bee Mine Products purchase! :)

  • Split the section of hair into two even pieces.

  • Using both hands, begin twisting 1 section over the other. Continue this process until you get all the way to the end.

  • Once you reach the end of the two strand twist, roll the ends in one direction multiple times to make sure the twist does not come loose. This may not work on very thin/fine hair types. If your child's hair cannot hold a two strand twist by itself, you may need to use an ouchless ponytail holder.

Half way done!

I prefer keeping twists in overnight for best results but we didn't have much time so I took Ky's twists out after about 1 hour.

Ky loved the results! You can check out her sister Lil Bit's style with step-by-step instructions by clicking here.

Here's an older twist out I did on Ky last year.

Criss-Cross Cornrows with Two Strand Twist Out

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a nice 4th of July. I decided to keep Miss A's 4th of July hair style fairly simple and go with criss-cross cornrows going half way back into two strand twists. Read below for more info on how this style was achieved.

First, I washed, detangled, moisturized (with Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer and Virgin Coconut Oil on top) then banded. You can read all about how I do that and what products I use by clicking here.

After Miss A's hair dried I removed all of the bands and parted her hair from ear to ear. I tied the back section off and began working on the top section. At an angle, I parted two straight sections and in those straight sections I parted 3 individual sections to begin the criss-cross cornrow. You can see how I criss-cross cornrow by clicking here. I used Bee Mine Curly Butter on each cornrow.

I left the remaining hair loose at the end of each cornrow until I had 2 cornrows side-by-side then I applied a generous amount of Bee Mine Curly Butter to the remaining hair and twisted the two sections together.

After the top section was complete I moved on to the back. I parted large squares, applied some curly butter and twisted each section together. I rolled the ends of each twist between my fingers to make sure the twist did not unravel.

After a couple of hours of letting the two strand twists set I carefully unraveled each twist, starting from the end of the twist and working my way up and viola- A beautifully defined twist out! See pictures below.

Little Girls Natural Hairstyles: Twist Out's + Puff with Twisted Bang

Miss A and her cousins. Click pictures to enlarge
Natural hair, it's a beautiful thing on little girls, no? No matter what texture or length.

I told you all on our Facebook page I was going to post more pictures and details of Miss A and her cousins hair so let's get started.

Let's discuss Miss A's older cousins hair first. You saw her Side Cornrows with Two Strand Twists style posted a few days ago and I mentioned we planned on doing a twist out. The day after I styled her hair she came back over so I could remove the twists. I didn't really do anything special other than take the two strand twists out. When doing a twist out, I slowly unravel from the ends and work my way up. As you can see, her twist out turned out fabulous! Very well defined. She really loved it and could not stop admiring herself in the mirror. This was her first ever twist out.

Moving on to Lil Bit. I posted her Cornrows and Twisted Bangs style the other day as well. For pictures, we decided put her hair up in a high ponytail and gently brush the hair out for a nice round puff. I pulled the twisted bangs to the side and added a bow. How adorable does she look?

And last, but certainly not least, Miss A! You saw her Two Strand Twists with Braided Roots + High Bun hair style posted about a week ago. She has another EEG this week so I had to go ahead and take the twists down. Her twist out came out beautiful. I like the idea of leaving the braids in at the roots because her roots are the first to puff up when she wears twist outs and braid outs. Another happy girl!

I should have a post up next week on how YOU can get the perfect twist out on any hair type so be on the look out for that.

Natural Hair Styles for Little Girls: Cornrows & Twist Out - Flat Twists & Twist Out

Click pictures to enlarge
Miss A had some of her cousins over this past weekend and I was pleasantly surprised when they asked me to do their hair! Even the little 3-year-old! I mean, what 3 year old do you know who actually wants to sit still to have their hair styled? I know my soon-to-be 3 year old son wants no part of hair time.

I styled Miss A's older cousin first. She is 9 years old and really wanted to wear her hair out and curly. I washed her hair with Kinky Curly Come Clean Shampoo and conditioned with Bee Mine Daily Moisturizing Conditioner. After I rinsed the conditioner I applied a generous amount of Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer to her hair, focusing on her edges and ends. I began by parting the first section of hair to cornrow near her right temple. Using a metal rat tail comb, I parted at a slight angle. I applied a small amount of Bee Mine Curly Butter to each section before cornrowing for a little hold. I loosely tied off the end of each cornrow with a black rubberband. I cornrowed a total of 6 sections. Every 2 cornrows, I applied a small amount of Bee Mine Curly Butter and twisted the loose hair together. After I finished the top I just used my fingers to grab a medium amount of hair and twist them together, once again, using Bee Mine Curly Butter.

The next morning I removed the two strand twists and these are the results (below). I love how it turned out! This was her first time ever wearing her hair out like this so she was very excited.

Below is Miss A's 3 year old cousin. She wanted me to do her hair like her "sissy". I decided to keep it quick and simple. I parted small section of her hair and decided to do flat twists instead of cornrows because her hair is on the fine, thin side. I used Bee Mine Curly Butter on her hair as well. I twisted the rest of her hair and removed the twists in the A.M. Below are the results. :-)

Miss A was also wearing a twist out. I used Bee Mine Curly Butter on about 8 large twists.

Don't forget, our Bee Mine Discount code is still good through the end of this month (March). The code is BBBJAN and you will receive 10% off at www.beemineproducts.com

I hope you enjoyed this post! :-)

xoxo, Nik

Happy Halloween + Twist Out

Happy Halloween everyone! I hope you all have a great night. Be safe out there!

Miss A is going to be a fairy/butterfly. I got her costume at the last minute yesterday and it was totally meant to be because it was the last of everything (costume, wings, tights, headband). Lil Man is going to be Brobee from Yo Gabba Gabba. Hopefully I will get pictures of him later on tonight.

I didn't do anything new with A's hair. I simply removed her two strand twist style from a few days ago. I didn't add any other product. As you can see, her hair still looks fab thanks to Bee Mine Products (BBBFALL will get you 10% off your purchase!). As you can see, her twist out shows a lot of length, this is because I twisted on dry, stretched hair (with product) and left it in for a few days.

I'd love to see pictures of your little ones in their costumes! Feel free to post them over on our Facebook Page!

A's Hair Updates

A has been wearing lots of two strand twists, twist outs and just out styles lately. Nothing too special but I wanted to give a quick update. She will be going back to protective styles very soon! :)

Basic two strand twists in the picture above. She had been playing in the water so they are wet. I used Lil Better Butter (review soon).

She wore a high bun (no filler) so the Hispanic Festival. I wrapped the braid with ribbon (came with her outfit) around her bun and pinned it. I used Kinky Curly Curling Custard to slick the bun down.

We met some readers of our blog, aren't they fab?!

I tried a new product in the picture above. I gave her some quick cornrows going half back and she wore a braid out from 4 large braids.

Wearing her hair all out.

This is a twist out using Curls Whipped Cream. I think she had close to 30 twists in overnight for this look,

This is what her twist out looked like when I picked her up (I had to change her for gym). Not too bad but definitely not as defined as it was. I think it had a lot to do with her playing outside and going to gym. I will try this again before our full review.

So there you have it! How has your child been wearing their hair lately?

Product Review: Beija-Flor Naturals Creme Brulee

First day of school. Three strand twist out right when I dropped her off.
First day of school.

The claim: "This product is for the happy and nappy, cute and coily, wild and wavy, kinky, curly...well you get the picture! No matter what your ethnic background, if the hair that sits on top of your head can be described as such you know that highly textured hair in all its glory tends to be dry, brittle and prone to breakage."

Price: $12.95 8oz or $24.50 16oz

Ingredients: Herbal Complex (Nettle, Burdock, Rosemary, Mashmellow Root). Organic Shea Butter, Aloe Butter, Murumuru Butter, Organic Aloe Vera Extract, Grapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Vegetable Emulsifier, Stearic Acid, Xanthum, Vitamin E Paraben Free Preservative, Fragrance

Review: I bought this product in late July and received it in early August. I'm happy I went ahead and bought the 16oz because I have used it on A's hair several times since then. First of all, this product smells amazing! It kind of reminds me of carrot cake. I'm not very good at describing scents though. Let me just say, it smells good enough to eat! It's nice and creamy, kind of thick, but not too thick. This creme easily absorbs in the hair. Perfect for braid outs and twist outs. It provides a really nice hold. The picture above was the first time I used the creme brulee. I set her wet hair in some three strand twists using this product overnight. Her hair was soft and beautifully defined in the morning. Even better, when I picked her up from school (almost 7 hours later), her hair practically looked and felt the same! See below for more pictures.

Boho braid with braid out (from above braids) with creme brulee.
Each time I have used this product her hair has remained well moisturized and her braid outs and twist outs have stayed defined, even after a long day at school. I look forward to experimenting some more with this product. I'm very pleased with this purchase and definitely plan on buying some more. By the way, I did use a discount code when I purchased this product. I think it was for 10% off. Unfortunately it is no longer valid but I will keep you all posted when they have another sale/discount code.
