Littleman's Lounge: King

You've met his big sister, Anisa (the cute little girl you always see in the guest blogs!), now it's time to meet her baby brother, King!

Tell us a little about yourself and your son:
King is my 17 month old son.  I always share pics and info about Anisa so I thought it was time to share a little bit about him. He has never had a haircut and I don’t plan on cutting it anytime soon. I’m thinking about locs in the future but we’ll see.

What is your son's hair care routine?
His routine is nonexistent at the moment. I’ve been styling his hair more but there is no routine in place. My go-to styles are cornrows or puffs. I wash his hair as needed (again, there is no set time). I mostly co-wash his hair but when I use a “shampoo” I use the Bee Mine Bee Nourished Ayurvedic Herbal Bar. I was using the HEHH (old ingredients) for his co-washes but I will probably start using the Suave Professionals Almond and Shea Butter Moisturizing Conditioner until I find something else.

What kind of products do you use on his hair?
I mostly use Bee Mine products on his hair. If not, I will use my own mixture of shea butter, coconut oil, castor oil and vitamin E oil. I also use Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Lite: The Curl Booster.

Can we see some hair pictures?
Of course!

Newborn - His hair was very straight!

How does your son feel about his hair?
He’s not talking yet but he definitely knows about hair! He likes to watch me do Anisa’s hair and he like to grab the hair bands and try to put them in his hair! Lol! He also likes to get the comb and try to comb his hair.

If you had to share one hair care tip, what would it be?
My tip would be to encourage your kids to love who they are. They need to know that they are beautiful! Another tip would be that healthy hair is far more important than length.

Littleman's Lounge: "Man"

This is our last family photo from august of last year. His hair is much much longer than that now.

Tell us a little about yourself and your son:

I'm Shay and my son is "Man". I'm biracial myself (mom is white, dad is black) and I've been natural most of my life, expect for the time when I was a teen I thought it'd be cool to do a relaxer... NOT! I knew when I had kids that I'd keep their hair natural, it just seems easier to me. Although my husband is black, their hair texture is no where near what I expected it to be. My son is will be 2 in July and as far as his hair type I'm not too sure. I just know that it is SUPER curly, very easy to tangle and mat up and very soft.

What is your son's hair care routine?

I typically style his hair once a week or one every week and a half. it really just depends on how his hair is looking and his mood. he's never had a hair cut and i'm cool with that =). sometimes he wears a cap thing on his hair for a few days after he gets braids. i try to always let him wear a silk cap in the car because his carseat drys his hair out so bad.

What kind of products do you use on his hair?
I used L'Oreal Ever Pure Sulfate Free shampoo in the Moisture kind and HE herbal hydration conditioner. I just recently picked up a braid spray at Sallys that is for nonbreakage/moisture/itchy scalp. It smells great and seems to be working pretty good. Sometimes I use a small bit of gel when I braid his hair.

Can we see some hair pictures?

I really like his hair loose but because he's so young and so active, it's just not that wise to leave it out for long periods.

He was born with a head full of hair and didn't loose any of it. The texture was slick as a board though. This is the day he was born

I swear his hair is even longer than that now.

How does your son feel about his hair?

Although he's only 1 1/2 i think he really likes it. He points to his hair a lot and says haiirrrrrrr and smiles. He likes to shake his hair a lot too.

If you had to share one hair care tip, what would it be?
take the time to properly style/take care of the hair from the beginning and it'll save you a big headache later. Even soft hair needs moisture!

I do have a blog where I post photos for inspiration, it's mainlybraids.blogspot.com

Littleman's Lounge: Hayden

Tell us a little about yourself and your son:
My name is Kara. My son Hayden is a 4 year old boy, he is biracial, Irish and Haitian. His hair is brown and wavy. I think that it was curlier when he was younger.

What is your son's hair care routine?
I wash his hair every other day with Organix Nourishing Coconut Milk shampoo and conditioner. He had his first big haircut when he was two. He now gets trims every two or three months. I never get it cut too short. I love the curls!

What kind of products do you use on his hair?
In the mornings, I spritz his hair with water and then I use a little Organix Cocunut Milk mousse to pump up the curls.

How does your son feel about his hair?
I don’t think he cares that much about his hair, but he never gives us a problem styling it or cutting it.

If you had to share one hair care tip, what would it be?
Find a stylist who listens to you and that you trust. Hayden's hair was butchered one time by a horrible stylist.

Here he is at 1

This was the day of his first haircut. He was just 2.

Three years old.

Littleman's Lounge: Lewis

Tell us a little about yourself and your son:

I’m Alison, mum to Lewis 5 (and Layla 2). Lewis is bi-racial (I’m white and nat: English and my husband is black, nat: Nigerian)

What is your son's hair care routine?

When Lewis was younger I left his hair to grow but he didn’t enjoy having his hair washed (he still doesn’t) and detangled. I had his hair put in cornrows a couple of times but they always looked untidy quickly, with flyaways and at the time I wasn't sure how to run maintenance.

I really didn’t want to cut his hair and clung onto it. Finally, finally when he was around 2 and a half I allowed my husband to take him to the barbershop (with the compromise that ‘I must still see curls’). We get his hair cut every 4-6 months because he doesn’t like the barbershop either (the hair clippers scare him and his eyes get all teared up) and I’m walking the fine line of not wanting to take him to the barbershop because its such drama when he’s there versus his hair getting so long that it take more time to comb and detangle thoroughly. When he was around 4 he decided he wanted his hair to grow and I explained that was ok but we’d need to take more time to look after it and so we went along with that for about 9 months and he told me that “ your combing my hair and making it long and its taking a long time to comb” I asked him if he wanted to have shorter hair that would take less time to comb or continue with growing and he said “short” … so off to the barbers we went (and he cried again).

What kind of products do you use on his hair?

Since trying A’s routine on my daughter and trying some Bee Mine samples (which I love) I’ve adapted the routine for Lewis:

Shampoo Twice a Week

(1) wash with the Bee Mine Tea Tree & Peppermint Shampoo x 2 a week (Lewis sweats a lot running around and in bed and so I like to shampoo his hair more often)

(2) Condition with Bee Mine Deep conditioner (leave on for 10 mins whilst he plays in the bath and I comb) then light rinse out

(3) Then I use Bee Mine Luscious Moisturiser in his hair and style (comb)

Daily

(1) Comb out with either Bee Mine Juicy Daily spritz or Bee Mine Curly Butter (depends on my mood and if I think his hair looks dry)

After Swimming

(1) Co-wash with Bee Mine Daily Moisturiser x 1 a week after swimming.

(2) Apply Bee Mine Luscious Moisturiser and comb

None of it takes a long time because his hair is short.

Can we see some hair pictures?

Pic 1: This is the most recent snap of Lewis Feb 2011

Pic 2: July 2010 – this is about as long as Lewis’s hair gets before we go to the Barbers, perhaps with Bee Mine products that seem to cause less crying we can go longer if he wants.

Pic 3: Lewis @ around 3 years, this was after his 2nd haircut

Pic 4: Lewis @ around 18 months with his hair a little longer

Pic 5: Lewis with his Dad @ around 18 months (this is as long as we got his hair before cutting , it was very tightly curled and would spring back up but when wet it would be a good 3-4 inches down his back)

Pic 6: Lewis first hair braids Summer 2007

Pic 7: This is the after Lewis’s first hair cut, it is the shortest it has ever been (his Dad took him), I cried when he came home, it made him look so much older and here he is actually younger than he was in Pic 3

Pic 8 & 9 I can’t resist sharing 2 of my fav pics of my little man

How does your son feel about his hair?

He’s a typical boy and not really bothered by it, I think he’ll become more interested as he gets older. As I’ve mentioned he doesn’t like sitting still a long time for combing OR going to the Barbershop and at the moment it HAS to be one or the other. I bribe him into the barbershop when the daily “its taking a long time” complaints about combing his hair start to get too much. Although since I’ve started using Bee Mine the complaints about hair routines have become a lot less.

If you had to share one hair care tip, what would it be?

I'm not sure I'm in a place to give tips because I'm so new to looking after curly hair properly but if what I've learned is “listen to your child” and the signs they give you about their hair. If I’m honest I clung onto Lewis’s long hair longer than I should have done because of my own desires and visions of a beautiful baby with glorious curls and long hair that I could style and I associated his curls / longer hair with the baby / toddler years. I still have my beautiful baby with glorious curls that are easier to manage and now less drama for both of us.

The other tip is finding a routine that works for both of you and always MOISTURISE (since I’ve paid more attention to this area the *routine* has become easier). I’ll continue to maintain his hair in a short style but that is in great condition so if he decides he wants to grow it out again we’ll have the basic tools, products and hair condition already in place.

Yay! Finally a Littleman's Lounge submission! How handsome is Lewis? Put this child in modeling or TV! lol :) I love that even though Lewis doesn't have much anymore, mom still knows it should be properly cared for and moisturized. I look forward to seeing a future Diva Spotlight from little sister, Layla! Thanks again for sharing, Alison!

Littleman's Lounge: Bae Bae

Photobucket

Photobucket

Tell us a little about yourself and your son:

First, I would like to say...Thank You Nikki, for allowing my son to be a part of your blog.

This is Laverius aka Bae Bae (like the song a bay bay) aka Redman.,.....he just turned 5 years old this month and the youngest of four boys. I have not figured out what his hair type is. I know he has wavy, curly, thin, thick and lots of shrinkage that I love.

What is your son's hair care routine?

Bae Bae has a simple routine. Winter/cold months, he gets cowashed once every two weeks. Summer/warmer months, he gets cowashed once a week and during the cowash is when I detangle his hair with a large tooth comb. Sometimes I put conditioner in his hair as a leave in. I rarely use shampoo because it's drying. I only shampoo when his hair has build up. I use a clarifyng shampoo 2-3 times a year if needed. After he gets a cowash , I use a alot of moisturizing lotion on his hair before he gets his ponytails. I do use rubberbands but they have to be soaked in olive oil and where ever I place the rubberband on his hair must have lots of moisture. The rubberbands are never tight because it will cause breakage. I always cut the rubberbands from his hair so there is no breakage. His hair only needs to be sprayed with a moisturizing finishing mist 1 to 2 times a week because I use enough moisturizer to last awhile. He never gets rubberbands on the ends of his ponytails, if they look as if they are dry or matted..I just spray with the moisturizer, take the ends down, detangle and rebraid that part. Bae Bae wears mostly 2-20 ponytails and I switch up the parts to minimize breakage from having the same parts and the hair possibly being pulled into the same style all the time. I never use a brush on his hair at all. Once his hair is detangled, I just gently pull his hair into the ponytail, band the hair and braid it. I redo his ponytails according to how many he has. If he has lots of ponies I redo them once every two weeks. Less ponies equals once a week. I trim his hair every 2-3 months. When he gets a trim I put his hair in ponytails and 2 strand his hair as far down as possible and trim. Sometimes he may not need a trim and Iwill trim at least an inch or two off.. He only wears his hair in braids 2 maybe 3 times a year..when they are taken down I will do another trim just in case the beads he had in his hair caused any breakage. Redman sometimes sleep in a satin cap but I don't put to much pressure on him to wear it.

What kind of products do you use on his hair?

I'm still trying to find a good shampoo. As for now I use V05 moisturizing conditioners for cowash and a little for a leave in , VO5 moisturizing shampoo or clarifying shampoo only if there's buildup I know a cowash will not cleanse. For moisture..I use Wave Nouveau Finishing Lotion and Wave Nouveau Finishing Mist. I have tried Pantene products, Mane n Tail products and much more and found out that less has worked better for him.

Can we see some hair pictures?

Sure.

How does your son feel about his hair?
He loves his hair and is always showing it off. I will never blow dry or straigten his hair and yes I do get tempted to see his true length but I'm scared. I will never cut his hair completely off or give him a texturizer because it is not my choice... it's his. I will not allow him to make a decision until he is an adult because our children go through so much of what society feels how a young man/boy should wear his hair and put their beliefs off on them. If he wants.. I will keep it trimmed to a certain length, just as I do for his brothers until the day comes for him to make that decision with a clear level head.

If you had to share one hair care tip, what would it be?
It's hard to narrow it down to one. Let's see, some of the ladies have already given great tips. One of my great tips would have to be "Less Manipulation". I know it sounds bad but it does wonders for our kids hair. I stand by this tip and all of four of my boys have long hair. Yes, every child's hair is different but less is always better.

Okay, how can you deny Bae Bae's cuteness? His mother does a great job on his hair. I am taking notes since I plan on letting my little guy grow his hair out. Keep up the good work mom! I love his hair and I love how versatile his styles are.

Littleman's Lounge: Jay'son

Photobucket

Tell us a little about yourself and your son:

My Name is Tasha, 22 and I am also Bi-Racial (1/2 Black 1/2 Chamorro [Pacific Islander from Guam]) and Jay'son is 2 and he is 3/4 Black 1/4 Chamorro. I have been interested and researching Bi-Racial Hair Care for about 2yrs after I have been trying to restore MY own curls back to a healthy state, my mom tried to maintain my hair, but she was often times clueless and when I started taking over the care of my hair, I caused a lot of damage to it, so I have vowed to learn how to care for my children's B-Racial hair.

What is your son's hair care routine?

I wash Jay'son's hair about every other day when its shorter and when we grow it out, and his curls come in, I wash about once to twice a week. I make sure I condition/Cowash it in between washings. To refresh his curls, I have a conditioner/water mix in a spray bottle that I spray on and comb through, then I add coconut oil. At nights, his dad will put a DuRag on his hair and he sleeps on satin pillow cases to retain the moisture in his hair (cotton pillow cases will deplete the natural oils in the hair).

What kind of products do you use on his hair?

Shampoo: Garnier Fructis Moisturizing for Dry or Damaged Hair Fortifying Shampoos or Dove's Moisture Therapy Shampoo

Conditioner: Herbal Essences' Hello Hydration or Cabellina del caballos (Which I LOVE LOVE LOVE... )

Styling Products: Coconut Oil and/or ORS' Olive Oil Moisturizing Lotion

How does your son feel about his hair?

Jay'son LOVES his hair, whether its short with a fade, Mid with Waves or long with Curls, He also asks me or his dad to brush/comb his hair, he loves to "help" wash and condition his hair. Lol.

If you had to share one hair care tip, what would it be?

Since we live in Vegas, during the summer months, we keep Jay'son's hair fairly low and one tip to those who cut their Lil' Man's curls, make sure NOT to cut his natural hair line, no matter how cute it is to cut or taper his hairline, if he is 5 or younger, it will mess up his hairline and that's not cute! Also, if you keep his hair low, make sure not to cut his hair too low, that will mess up his curls and they may not grow back how they were growing naturally. If your Lil Man is rockin' his curls, moisture is a PLUS, I can not stress what a big difference a proper moisturizer can do for his curls.

Jay'son is way too cute!!! That first pictures is priceless! His parents are doing a great job with his hair. His curls look healthy and well moisturized. Keep up the good work!!

Littleman's Lounge: Donavan

Tell us a little about yourself and your son:

I’m Michelle..26 year old single mom to 3 year old Donavan. He is ½ white, ½ black.

What is your son's hair care routine?

We wash once a week and co-wash twice a week (or more, if needed- boys can sweat a lot! lol) In the mornings, I spray his hair with a conditioner/water mix to freshen up his curls before he goes to school. I am in the process of growing his hair out, so it’s pretty simple for now. I plan on cornrowing his hair as soon as it’s long enough.

What kind of products do you use on his hair?

I shampoo and condition with Organix Coconut Milk shampoo and conditioner. My new favorite product is the GVP Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm- found at Sally’s Beauty Supply for cheap! Around $6! This stuff smells wonderful and works wonders on Donavan’s curls.

Can we see some hair pictures?

This was first posted on November 23rd, 2009. Below is Donavan's hair update as of January 2010. It seems to be growing fast!

How does your son feel about his hair?

Donavan loves his hair. When I used to take him to the barber shop for haircuts, he would be so upset to see his curls fall on the floor. lol I’ve been wanting to grow his hair out, but it wasn’t until recently that his hair started growing evenly on his head. I showed him pictures of boys with longer hair and cornrows and he is really excited to have his hair done the same way.

If you had to share one hair care tip, what would it be?

MOISTURIZE!!! It makes such a difference! Biracial hair can be hard to manage…but only if you make it that way. Do your research and learn about products…it will make such a difference in your child’s hair.

Our very first little man!! Donavan is such a little handsome guy and judging from all the different pictures I've seen of him he has quite the personality. His mother is an amazing woman and is doing such a great job with his curls! I cannot wait to see what it looks like once it grows out! Keep us updated Michelle! We would love to see his progress.
