Question of the Week:
If you had to share one hair care tip, what would it be and why?
I know I ask this on Diva Spotlight and Littleman's Lounge but I would to hear from you all. It will be nice to have all of your tips in one place. I'm sure we can learn something from one another. :)
I would like to share a tip about retaining moisture.
ReplyDeleteWater penetrates the shaft of the hair while oils coat the shaft of the hair, which means that water based products moisturize and that oils seal in the moisture.
Oils and butters are not moisturizers.
One thing that I see from first hand experience as a natural stylist is that the combination of water based products and oils/ butters are one of the best defenses against dry brittle hair.
Moisture is one of the key components in growth and the health of your hair and scalp.
For all the beginners with newborns my tip is touch their hair early and often that way they are used to it.
ReplyDeleteWow! Great tips.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I've realized is the importance of sleeping with either a satin cap on or on a satin pillowcase.
So much moisture is lost from the hair at night when this isn't done.
No dry brushing! And on that same issue, start from the bottom up when combing/brushing hair out and detangling.
ReplyDeleteMy tip - Patience. If it takes you 3 hours to detangle your hair, then budget for 5 hours. The more patient you are, the more your hair will love you back and the less frustrated you will be because you know the size of the task ahead.
ReplyDeleteFor KIDS: I spent a lot of money trying to find a good hair product for my daughter. I learned that expensive is not always best but it is worth the try. When something doesn't work for you, give it to someone else (especially if it was expensive lol). Once you find something that works don't change, at least not for a while.
ReplyDeleteFor ladies: People ask me how I made my hair grow. I didn't really do anything super special but I think going to one person to do your hair every time makes a big difference.
GREAT TIPS!
ReplyDeleteJc, my tip was going to be finger detangling. This has truly been a life saver! But I know I have been slacking lately. :( I guess that's where the patience comes in, thanks for the reminder!
For A, I believe finger detangling has helped her retain length, since I'm being gentle and getting any knots/tangles out with my fingers, I'm not ripping her hair out or causing unnecassary breakage. More importantly, I am not hurting her or tugging on her scalp.
Melo, totally agree with your kid tip. ;)
Debbie, my son is almost 2 and won't let me touch his hair! lol When he was much younger he would let me but I stopped for a while, big mistake.
ReplyDeleteClipping my baby girls ends! I know we try to hang on to all the length, but she needed it. Plus her hair started to grow like wildfire when I started clipping it.
ReplyDeleteProtecting the hairline by not braiding tightly or pulling the hair into tight styles is always an important tip. No one wants traction alopecia (yikes!)
ReplyDeleteMost important for me, and they go hand in hand so treat as one tip (lol):
ReplyDelete****Healthy Diet + Clean Scalp****
It's how I got my children to have hair past their bottoms--my son no longer wears his hair long tho--even when I was doing other things wrong like not trimming ends and sometimes forgeting to moisturize. Without that foundation, no product or hair style or technique is going to be of much help for my kids hair in the long run.
Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize....I have found that for me and both of my daughters that keeping our hair well moisturized. Water is our bet moisturizer however I have to seal also. I normally do their hair every other weekend in the winter and if I properly moisturize and seal their hair when I remove the braids even though they may look frizzy they are not dry.
ReplyDeleteTwo tips- moisturize and take your time!!!
ReplyDeleteAbout the baby comment- I totally agree!! My son is a year and he pretty much lets me do whatever I want. If only he had more hair though lo!!!
Quick question- will we see a new Littleman's Lounge soon?
ReplyDeleteGreat tips!
ReplyDeleteI think a good tip is to get your child involved in caring for their hair early on. This way they will learn how to care for their natural hair. Explain to them what you are doing to their hair and why it is important.
My tips are don't get caught up in comparing hair & NEVER speak negatively about your childs hair esp. to your child. Whether it's texture, styling, or wishing you had the money for certain products, concentrate on what works for your child's hair. Work within your budget & skill level until you can upgrade. But don't get caught up in the negativity.
