Q.O.T.W: How do you keep your child entertained?

How do you keep your child entertained while washing or styling their hair?

I think we all know that keeping a young child entertained long enough to complete a style can sometimes be quite the task. So this week I would love to hear how you all keep your child entertained! Does your child have a favorite DVD, book, or toy? Please share any tips you may have.

  2. Well, my DD doesn't mind having her hair washed, she loves having water in her face lol. But when I do her hair, I either have on Dora, Spongebob, Diego, Team Umizoomi, etc.... Or I'll give her the rat tail comb when ever I'm not using it.

  3. I wash my sons hair when its bath time ( only when I'm done bathing him is when I'll wash the condtioner out with him laying on my lap with his head leaning back...he mostly gets cowashes). He has a boat load of toys in the tub with him with lots of bubbles as well to dunk the toys into. At the end of the bath, hes so worn out he sometimes just lays back and let me rinse the conditioner out.

  4. We've started watching discovery channel (She's 7) But usually we'll pop in a movie she's been wanting to seeing or she combs her dolls hair.

  5. My daughter is 2 and she hates getting her hair washed..i just try to get it over with as quick as possible. For braiding and whatnot I put in any disney movie and give her the beader to put beads on while I braid. Since she is so young her attention span is short so I also get stacks of books, snacks, and color books to play with too. I try to get it all done by the time the movie is over. If I can't finish then we take a break till the next day.

  6. Winnie the Pooh, Raffi, Joe Scruggs or "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" lol :) and sometimes playing with all the hair stuff helps too. But her head stays more still longer if she's watching TV.

(I try to be pretty picky about what she watches, she's only 19 months old! so 3 out of the 4 videos I mentioned are actually kid's concerts. They do the trick and maybe she'll learn some songs at the same time!)

  7. I have made a favorites list on you tube for my 2 year old. She doesn't watch TV and doesn't play with anything long enough to stay occupied. You Tube has a ton of great kids song and she loves to hear music. I just have to be careful about her dancing to it.

  8. TV and snacks!! It seems to work so far. We also talk a lot during that time. :)

  9. We usually watch Dora, Spongebob, Diego, or any Disney princess movie. She also likes to do a lot of coloring (right now is princess Tiana pictures). If we take off beads (like this coming up weekend) then her "job" is to put them back on their right spot. You can check out a picture of her "helping me re-organize her beads at http://mylittlerascals-letty.blogspot.com/
She also likes to do her dolls hair.

  10. Washing has become easier b/c I have a long counter in the kitchen and I make a comfortable mat for her and let her lay down with her hair in the sink and I wash it in 4 sections. Then to entertain while I style she watches her new laptop she got for Christmas or eats dinner. Then we sing songs and play games sometimes and I have to let her get up every now and then b/c we both start getting tired. My child has a much hair a A so its a TASK!! Especially making sure its detangled

  11. When my girls were younger, I let them pick their favorite movie or tv show. Now, they play on the computer (usually webkinz) which is nice because they sit still, and I get to monitor their internet use:)

  12. We usually pop in a DVD. Playdough is a good distractor, going to have to try the re-sorting beads idea. I have also had her play at the computer. She is only 3 and doesn't have much for computer skills yet but there are a couple of good toddler sites where they just have to hit any button for something to happen.

  13. ok,i don't have any kids as yet but whenever i am styling my little cousin's hair i usaully let she watch her favorite shows on youtube.that really works.

  14. I turn on a cartoon or give her a toy that she loves. She's only two, but she is actually very good at sitting still and she does not cry.

  15. Washing my little girl's hair is a piece of cake since we got a detachable shower head. I pretend we are at a salon. She loves it. As far as styling, I have tried everything under the sun, and she is super tender headed and is a drama queen. I usually put something on tv, or if we are in the bathroom, we sing and tell jokes. The promise of stickers for good behavior has helped us a bit too.

  16. My daughter loves books and coloring. So far, I have found that she sits still the best when she is in her school desk coloring or reading a book. The first time I tried the desk I was so surprised at how still and long she sat. I was done styling her hair and she still sat there reading away. Toddler style reading anyways..lol!

  18. When they were smaller, I set them in the sink. Then they got too big. Now I set them in front of the TV with their favorite show on, give them a barbie doll (they like to fix it's hair), a few ponytails, and a comb. They'll sit through a 30 minute hair do!

  19. Styling has usually happened with a video of some sort on. I borrow kids DVDs from the library when I can so they have something new to watch. Now that my girls are older, Legos have been a big hit during styling time too. Drawing and reading sometimes keeps them occupied, but don't always provide enough distraction.

  20. Haha, whatever she wants... but, no, seriously, books, toys, DVDs, food, whatever will keep her attention for the moment...

  21. My Daughter is 14 months old. I have her sit in a high chair and have her watch "My baby can read".She falls asleep while I am doing her hair.. I then take her out of the chair ad contiunue doing her hair, while she lays down on a pillow placed on my lap

  22. My twins are 1 going on 2 in June and the HATE!!! Getting there hair washed, what I do is take a mild soapy rag and wipe there hair with that while in the middle of there bath, then I'll take a q-tip or cotton ball and cleanse there scalp witch hazel...To keep them entertained well, I either feed them (snack like apples, bananas, etc.), there favorite show on Nick Jr. (Wow wow wubbzy, sesame street), they actually like music, or I will but on ON Demand what ever helps

  23. i let my daughters wash there own hair while in the tub, and i go behind them and re-wash it or rinse out what they didnt get, as for when styling i through a video on the computer and they watch it, sesame street or some natural type videos about animals

  24. I don't have a child but I do my niece's hair(she's 8). When I wash her hair I always talk to her about how her week was & how was school, sometimes we even sing. Then, while I'm styling her hair I always have her pick out a movie or a tv show that she really loves.

  25. Thank goodness for Sprout and Disney Channel on demand. We sing, and if I happen to hit a snag I give her a teddy graham lol.

  26. for my 21 months old,i have to rotate between letting her play with her hair accessories, watching elmo, or wait until she falls asleep, because she gets annoyed pretty fast and doesn t like her hair to be washed(she hates when water gets into her face) nor combed.

  27. I have 2 year old twins & they HATE getting their hair washed...hate it...I used to wash their hair on the counter in the sink, but they would panic & scream & cry to the point my neighbor knocked on my door once.

I bought them a visor & I wash their hair in the tub now & let them pour cups of water on their own heads. Now washing isn't as bad.

Detangling is easy, b/c I do it the right way & it doesn't hurt them

As far as styling it, only one of my twins will let me actually braid her hair & snacks & Disney or Nick help keep her distracted. They're into Princes & the Frog & Tinkerbell

  28. My 2 year old dtr has little patience for me doing her hair ("Ouwwwww Mama!" even when i know it's not hurting her!)so the 2 things that I've found are: sitting her on bathroom sink & letting her play in water w/ feet & hands or if she's not too fussy she likes standing on the toilet & watching me do her hair. I'm gonna try the youtube idea too (she loves to sing w/ JamarooKids). Oh I've also tried it when she's sleeping but she somehow still knows I'm doing her hair & she'll move her head around!! lol

  29. The hairwashing section is fine. my daughter doesn't have a problem with that. It's the time when i'm either taking out a style or placing a new one in... so for that task i always load her up with a selection of nibbles her fave is a plate of grapes and an apple chopped up - i then time it so all her fave cartoons are on while im doing her hair... she's usually caught up in singing along with the songs that the time tends to pass fairly quickly. The problem that i now face is keeping my "hair challenged" 1 yo away from all the action as it has started becoming an issue lately.
