Easter Updo for Little Girls with Natural Hair

Are you ready for Easter? We are!! Anisa will be sporting this gorgeous updo along with her oh-so-cute dress!! Here's how I achieved this look: 

Prep:

I detangled and washed Anisa's hair the night before I did this style. Once her hair was washed, I detangled her hair once again with my fingers and coconut oil  Her hair was also blow dried. Next, I loosely banded her hair for bed and tried to come up with a style for the next day. 

Styling:

I knew that I wanted to do an updo but I didn't want to do a style that I've done before. It has also been awhile since I've braided her hair so I also wanted to incorporate cornrows in her new style. 

To begin, I removed all of the bands and finger combed all of her hair to one side. Next, I began making curved parts from the nape of her neck to the top of her head to make the cornrows.  I continued cornrowing her hair until the section I was working with was complete. As you can see in the pictures below, I did not cornrow her entire head. 

I ended up with two sections, one with cornrows and one without. I made 3 two-strand twists in the cornrowed section and 2 two-strand twists in the loose section. 

Next, I began rolling the twists around my fingers to form large rosettes. The rosettes were then pinned into place.

Straightening Thick 4b / 4c Natural Hair

After posting how I straightened Miss A's natural hair I got a lot of questions about how to straighten thick 4b / 4c hair and if I would use the same process, the answer is yes! When I picked Ky up her mother told me she tried to straighten her hair once in the past but it was still very poofy and frizzy and didn't last long at all. I am going to quickly take you through the steps and tools I used to straight Ky's hair.

Let's first take a look at how Ky's hair looks after banding for about 2 hours:

Tools/Products used:

• Hana Elite Pink 2 inch flat iron
• Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer (save 10% using code BBBSPRING at check out!)
• Ouchless bands for banding
• Denman d3 brush for detangling
• Extra virgin coconut oil

Details:

• First I washed, detangled then moisturized with Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer and banded Ky's hair in 6 sections. The reason I band the hair before flat ironing is to skip the blow drying process. The less heat used, the better!
• Once Ky's hair was stretched out I added a generous amount of extra virgin coconut oil through out her hair and working in small 1 inch sections flat ironed each detangled section of hair on about 350 degrees. I used the 2 inch pink Hana Elite flat iron. I continued the entire process until I was done. It took a little more than an hour to flat iron all of her hair. I passed each section only once however I went back and flipped the ends under (using large sections of hair) for a more finished look.

Little Girls Natural Twist Out - Step-by-step Instructions

Miss A's older cousin, Ky

Twist outs look great on all natural hair types and are absolutely adorable on little girls! I put together a quick picture tutorial for beginners. Hope it helps!

• Start with washed and detangled hair. I decided to go the extra step and band Ky's hair as well just to give it a little length.
• Part about a two inch section of hair with your fingers and add about a quarter size amount of your choice of product. I used Bee Mine Curly Butter on Ky's two strand twists. Don't worry about the white color showing up, it's from the product and it will fade away shortly.

• Split the section of hair into two even pieces.

• Using both hands, begin twisting 1 section over the other. Continue this process until you get all the way to the end.

• Once you reach the end of the two strand twist, roll the ends in one direction multiple times to make sure the twist does not come loose. This may not work on very thin/fine hair types. If your child's hair cannot hold a two strand twist by itself, you may need to use an ouchless ponytail holder.

Half way done!

I prefer keeping twists in overnight for best results but we didn't have much time so I took Ky's twists out after about 1 hour.

Little Girls Natural Hairstyle: Flexi-rod Updo with Cornrows

Miss A's cousin, Lil Bit!

This hair style is absolutely adorable for little girls (and big girls!) and perfect for any occasion!

Tools needed:

• Ouchless bands (for banding)
• A brush for detangling (I used Denman D4)
• A comb for parting
• Green 1/4" Flexi-rods (6 come in each pack, I believe I used 5 packs)
• A few bobbypins 
• Rubberbands
• Products for styling

I used the following products:

• Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer
• Bee Mine Curly Butter
• Curls (for Target) Curl Control Paste

Instructions:

•  I washed and detangled Lil Bit's hair. After washing I applied a generous amount of Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer to her hair from root to tip and banded her hair in 3 sections to stretch it for styling. (see photo below)

• I left the bands on for a few hours. I prefer keeping the bands in overnight however we did not have enough time so once I removed the bands her hair was stretched but slightly damp.
• Using my comb, I parted a circle on the top of her head and tied it off. This section of hair is where I wanted the curls to be.
• At the nape of her neck I began parting at a slight curve coming up to the top section of hair I had previously parted. I added a small amount of Bee Mine Curly Butter to each section I cornrowed and tied off each cornrow with a rubberband. 
• Once all of her cornrows were in I grabbed the 1/4" green flexi-rods, applied an even amount of Curls Control Paste to 1 to 2 inch sections and rolled the flexi-rod on to the hair. Instead of bending the rods I simply put a hair tie on the ends to hold them in place. See picture below.

• Her hair was already dry at this point so there was no heat involved. I never use heat when I use flexi-rods anyway which is why I use a product with good hold. I leave the flexi-rods in long enough for the curl to shape. I left these flexi-rods in for about an hour and a half while she played tea party with her cousins and sister.
• After an hour and a half I gently rolled off each flexirod and used 3 bobby pins to pin any falling curls to the front. 
• I added a small bow and viola! Beautiful!

Lil Bit absolutely loved her hair! She said she felt like she was in heaven and danced in front of the mirror for a good 30 minutes. Pleased indeed.
