Mini Box Braids

Guest Blogger, Aisha, shares the style she created after stretching hair with the African Hair Threading method.

Instructions:
  • Anisa's hair was threaded for 3 days. This wasn't the original plan, but she got sick so I had to let her rest. I released the bottom portion first. Releasing the thread was very easy and her hair was nicely stretched. You can see the results of her scissor fiasco! :-/
  • I plan to do small box braids on her hair and leave them in for about 3 weeks. Once I take the braids down, she will get a trim.I used my shea butter, coconut oil, castor oil, vitamin E oil mixture while braiding her hair. Since Anisa has eczema, her scalp (and the rest of her body) tend to get itchy. I've found that this mixture helps her. She recently had to get her first prescription meds for her eczema. The cold weather was not kind to her skin this year :-(
  • The back is complete.
  • I released the top threads before bedtime and made a couple of ponytails for school. I also gathered the box braids into one ponytail.
  • The following day I finished braiding both sides and added a simple bun on the top.
  • I added ouchless bands to give her braids a crinkly effect. This can also be achieved by braiding or plaiting the braids together.

  2. Her hair looks great!!! I have a question for Aisha...my daughter has eczema on her scalp as well. Have you noticed that when you apply products her scalp looks like you can see every hair follicle? When I apply products on my daughters scalp, it looks like her hair follicles are raised almost like bumps. I thought that this was an allergic reaction to something but it happens with almost every product that I use. Any help from anyone is appreciated..thanks!!

  4. Tiearra, the same thing happens to my daughters. Like Anisa said, the shea mixture helps the condition. I mix jojoba oil, a few drops of spearmint oil, olive oil, coconut oil and a few sprays of the Shea Moisture Reconstructive Elixer together and I apply it to their hair after washing/before styling. I try to make sure their hair and scalp are well moisturized during the week. I made a home-made spray with distilled water, aloe vera juice, spearmint oil, olive oil, and coconut oil, I spray this on their hair and scalp during the week to keep it moisturized. I've been using this mixture for a month and a half now, and I've noticed a great difference on their scalps! Last thing, I changed their shampoo and conditioner to Shea Moisture's Organice African Black Soap line, I also use the Dandruff and Dry Scalp Elixir. I wash and condition with the Shea Moisture, spray the elixir on their scalp, and then follow up with my shea butter mixture. I hope this helps! And sorry it was so long!!!!!!!

  5. Thank you! @ Tiearra85- I've never noticed that on her scalp. So far, it's just been really dry and itchy even after I've moisturized it. Right now her eczema is worse on her legs and belly. What are you using for your daughter?

@ Tierra85 I've noticed that on my daughters scalp with the bumbs, I've always wondered what it was. My daughter has eczema too and dry and itchy scalp. Clarissa that's great info thanks!!

  8. Thank you ladies for responding. I greatly appreciate it!! Aisha, I am currently using Bee Mine Daily Conditioner as a leave in, coconut oil to oil her scalp, and My Honey Child Aloe Vera Leave In. When using any of those products her follicles are not so raised, their visible but not like when I use other things. I've noticed that when I use products with shea butter, pure jojoba oil by itself, or pure olive oil by itself the "bumps" look a little more defined(if that makes sense). Also I recently purchased My Honey Child's Buttery Soy Hair Creme and it has the same effect as the others. I'm not sure if its me being crazy or if its actually something to be concerned about. I wish that I could post a pic but its not visible on pictures. Granted she suffers only from the normal baby hair loss and her hair is growing. She dosent really suffer from an itchy scalp from what I can see..she is only 9 months. She's been to the dermatologist and they say that her eczema is under control, but I'm just not comfortable with her scalp being like that. I have a six year old son and I cant remember his scalp being like this. Sorry for being so long winded..I cant help it..lol!
